Caramelized Onions

Caramelized onions can be used as a spread for burgers and sandwiches or as a base for soups like french onion soup and cream of mushroom soup, and even various dips. It’s very easy to make, but it does require a bit of time and a whole lot of onions. It requires only pantry ingredients and the recipe can easily be doubled and tripled or even quadrupled.

Makes- 1/3rd cup

Onion- 3 medium
Butter- 1 tablespoon
Oil- 1 tablespoon
Sugar- 1 tablespoon
Garlic- 2 cloves
Pepper- 1 teaspoon
Salt- to taste

In a non-stick saucepan, add all the ingredients and give it a good mix. Switch on the flame and let it cook with the lid on over a medium-low flame till it starts sweating, and changing colour from purple, to translucent white, light brown, and then to dark brown. The whole process may take up to 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally, making sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the pan.
